Forging Connections

In 2023, AchieveKids faced challenges and changes but overcame these with the structure and support of our incredible community. AchieveKids staff and service providers served over 135 students from 20 cities and 36 school districts to bring them specialized education, speech, mental health, and occupational therapy structured to fit their needs. With your support we have been able to expand the selection of books in our libraries, acquire new PE equipment to support healthy lifestyles for students of all ability levels, and provide healthy breakfasts and lunches for all our students.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to AchieveKids.

Forging connections

At AchieveKids, the process of forging connections lies at the heart of our educational approach. Our educators foster an environment where establishing connections is not only a goal but a fundamental aspect of the learning experience. Our dedicated professional staff work closely with students who have diverse and complex learning needs, aiming to develop relationships built on trust and understanding.

Before joining AchieveKids, our students often experienced multiple school placements. Our aim is to transform school into a safe, supportive, and connected environment where students feel comfortable taking the inherent risks involved in learning. The collaborative efforts between educators, students, and families create a community where everyone is valued and respected. These connections serve as the scaffolding supporting both the academic and personal growth of students, as we strive to create greater opportunities in their lives.

The significance of connections extends beyond our classrooms. Community partnerships provide job opportunities for our students, like-minded organizations offer valuable support, and our generous donors ensure that AchieveKids can stay focused on its mission. A wonderful example is the Summer Art Camp that the Pacific Art League hosted at our Palo Alto campus.  It was such a fun experience for our students that was all started by a “what if” connection.  We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of our community. Your connections are crucial to our long-term success, and we eagerly anticipate a year with a renewed focus on forging new connections.

forging connections

Between AchieveKids and the Pacific Art League

This year, AchieveKids forged a connection with the Pacific Art League in Palo Alto. The Pacific Art League has been teaching people of all ages and ability levels in the Bay Area since 1921. We were lucky enough to host one of their incredible teachers, Rachel Levine, and their Executive Director, Aly Gould, at our Palo Alto location for a few days in July.

Our staff and the PAL team collaborated and came up with different workshops tailored to our students and their individual needs. This allowed our students the opportunity to learn the basics of creating art and to be encouraged to use art as a form of self-expression and a tool for regulation.

“Creating art is a wonderful multi-sensory modality for our students to be able to regulate themselves so they can be more present and intentional as they move through their daily routines. Whether it be painting, making music, dancing, gardening, or playdough sculpting, art is an invaluable tool for increasing students’ independence and self-efficacy,” said Bailey Coe, one of our Occupational Therapists.

We are so grateful to have forged a connection with the Pacific Art League and thank them for their time and support of our mission.

Words of Appreciation

“AchieveKids means so much to our family. Valerie gets to go there and be successful in ways that she just could never be in traditional schools. She feels seen and understood. Her strengths are noted and appreciated and built upon. School has become a positive experience for her. At AchieveKids she has friends, she fits in, she isn’t singled out, she is just another kid learning, making mistakes and fixing it. As a special education teacher myself I’m continually impressed with AchieveKids and the ways they work to help kids grow and make sure that they are having a positive experience. I’m impressed with the way AchieveKids implements the heart of what special education could and should mean. AchieveKids really feels like the light at the end of the tunnel that we now get to be in.”

– Katie, Mom of a student at our PA campus

“It’s such a beautiful feeling when I drop our boys off in the morning at AchieveKids. We know they’ll be safe at school or on a community outing. They are learning and having fun everyday while developing their own individual skills. The best part is picking them up after school and seeing them smiling. We love how well they are supported and encouraged to try new things and explore new places. There’s no better feeling for a parent than knowing that your child is receiving such good care and a proper, structured education.”

– DeeAnn, Parent of two students at our PA campus
